Moment ex-Rangers star stuns Celtic with sensational free-kick as Kasper Schmeichel left with no chance

CELTIC moved 16 points clear at the top of the Premiership after Rangers slumped to a 2-1 defeat to Motherwell at Ibrox.

There was a 13-point gap before today’s fixture card and Celtic were on track to make it a sweet 16 when Jeffrey Schlupp scored his first goal for the Hoops to fire them in front.

But just five minutes later a former Rangers star tried to do his old club a massive favour and managed to cancel out Schlupp’s opener.

Stephen Robinson‘s men were level again after Declan John stepped up and stunned Kasper Schmeichel with a sensational free-kick.

The 29-year-old left-back, who joined Saints last November, curled his set-piece over the Celtic wall and into the back of the net with the help of a ricochet off the crossbar.

It was a sublime effort from the Welsh star who spent a year in Glasgow between 2017 and 2018.

Rangers fans were quick to praise their former player on social media after he found the target with the magnificent set-piece.

One even jokingly compared him to an Italian legend, saying: “Declan John otherwise known as Del Piero”

Another hailed: “That was an absolute screamer from ex-Rangers player Declan John. Wow.”

A third stunned fan commented: “Surely I’ve no just saw Declan John pinging a goal into them.”

It’s a goal he’ll remember for a long time but it was quickly cancelled out by Arne Engels who struck from the penalty spot before half-time.

John joined Rangers initially on loan from Cardiff City in August 2017 and then made the move permanent just four months later in December.

He didn’t stay in Glasgow long after that though as he was on his way out of the club the following summer.

Swansea City snapped him up on a three-year deal.

John played regularly for Gers during his short stint with the club and had FOUR separate managers d

Pedro Caixinha was the man in charge when he was signed before Graeme Murty replaced him and then Jimmy Nicholl’s very short spell ahead of Steven Gerrard‘s appointment.

John made 31 appearances for Gers and scored three goals.
