The retailer applied for permission to alter and refit a unit across the road from Princes Square Shopping Centre.

The empty unit was previously home to the Ted Baker store before it closed for good in August last year.

The plans state that the US brand is seeking permission to add new branded signage to the unit, according to Glasgow Live.

The documents also show that bosses are hoping to carry out renovations and make alterations to the inside of the store.

Planning officials at Glasgow City Council will consider the proposals in the coming weeks.

The new store in Glasgow will be New Balance’s second branch in Scotland.

The other branch is located in St James’ Quarter in Edinburgh.

New Balance was founded in Boston back in 1906 and has over 4,000 retail stores across the globe.

The brand is famous for selling high-quality trainers and shoes as well as a wide range of fitness clothing.

The firm also previously had a kit deal with Celtic which lasted for five years.

The partnership ended in 2020 after the Hoops sealed a multi-million pound deal with sporting giants Adidas.

The deal, which began on July 1, 2020, was described as being the biggest kit sponsorship ever to be announced across Scottish sport” at the time.

However, it saw their run of kits with New Balance come to an end after 15 designs.

New Balance isn’t the only firm that is planning to open a new store in Glasgow city centre.

Japanese brand UNIQLO has begun work on its new store in St Enoch Centre on Argyle Street.

It is set to take over two empty adjacent units and transform them into one large 22,500 sqft superstore.
