Every Ghanaian should show gratitude to veterans – Captain Ben Duah (Rtd)

The Executive Director of the Veteran Administration Ghana, Captain Ben Duah (Rtd), has called on Ghanaians to recognize and appreciate the sacrifices of ex-soldiers who risked their lives for the nation’s peace and security.

Speaking during the 77th anniversary of the 28th February Crossroad shooting, he stressed that gratitude should not be limited to the government but should be a collective effort.

“The sacrifice was for the people of Ghana. So why should we limit appreciation to the government? Every Ghanaian should be involved in showing gratitude. In other countries, this is a norm, but unfortunately, here, people are either unaware or indifferent,” he stated.

The 28th February Crossroad shooting remains one of the most defining moments in Ghana’s history. In 1948, three ex-servicemen—Sergeant Adjeitey, Corporal Atipoe, and Private Odartey Lamptey—were gunned down by British colonial forces during a peaceful protest demanding fair treatment and unpaid benefits.

Their deaths ignited widespread anger and became a catalyst for the country’s push toward independence.

Decades later, as the nation commemorates their sacrifice, the conversation on how Ghana treats its veterans remains relevant.

Many retired soldiers struggle with inadequate pensions, poor living conditions, and limited recognition.
