“The usual execs came in and tore it to pieces”: We May Never Know What Beau DeMayo Did, but ‘X-Men ‘97’ Season 2 Didn’t Deserve This

Screenwriter Beau DeMayo has responded to the delay of X-Men ‘97 Season 2, blaming the higher-ups for making fans wait longer when he already had the show locked in. We remember that in 2024, he was reportedly fired from the project due to unclear reasons.

He parted ways with the studio just days before the premiere of the animated program. He was also said to have finished the work on Season 2, and more shockingly, he alleged that Marvel would remove his credits on the upcoming show.

Beau DeMayo blasts Marvel bosses for X-Men ‘97’s delay

The success of X-Men ‘97 was brought not only by the element of nostalgia but also by the epic storyline and overall production. The franchise experienced a revival like never before, and because of this, fans are certainly eager to see what happens next to our beloved mutants.

Unfortunately, Marvel Studios’ Head of Streaming, Television, and Animation Brad Winderbaum confirmed via Collider that we have to wait till next year for the sequel: “Season 2 of X-Men ‘97 is going to be in ‘26. We’re working on it now,” he said.

Winderbaum noted that the excellent response from fans and high viewership opened the opportunity for them to develop other animated shows and maintain the yearly cadence of releases. While X-Men ‘97 remains a top priority, this does not seem like the reason why Season 2 has been delayed.

Comic book creator Robert Liefeld expressed his dismay on social media following the latest news on the show’s release date. Beau DeMayo responded to the post and revealed that he had Season 2 ready, but the Marvel executives didn’t want his output because it wasn’t kid-friendly. Read his tweet below:

It’s a shame because, as Liefeld said, the delay kills the momentum. We understand that the studio wants to deliver only the best and highest quality of content, and they could be taking their time as well to make sure that it would live up to the expectations of viewers.

Why was Beau DeMayo fired?

In March 2024, Marvel issued a formal statement via Variety announcing that they no longer have an affiliation with DeMayo. An insider told the outlet that “evidence was discovered of s*xual misconduct” and that he had repeatedly violated the termination agreement. This eventually led to his credits in Season 2 getting moved.

This is sad news for fans, as Winderbaum previously told the outlet that DeMayo did a wonderful job writing for Seasons 1 and 2, but now it seems that they are no longer going forward with the original script.

X-Men ‘97 is currently available to watch on Disney+.
