Nurses and Midwives deserve better – UPNMG urges Mahama to Act

The Union of Professional Nurses and Midwives, Ghana (UPNMG), has urged President John Dramani Mahama to address the pressing challenges faced by nurses and midwives.

In a press release dated February 28, 2025, the union expressed disappointment that the President’s State of the Nation Address failed to highlight the struggles of healthcare workers, despite his commitment to national development.

“While we recognize the government’s commitment to national development and a plan to fix the economy, we are deeply concerned that the address failed to highlight the struggles of nurses and midwives, who are the backbone of Ghana’s healthcare system,” the statement read.

The union highlighted issues such as salary delays, poor working conditions, inadequate resources, and stalled promotions, warning that the continued neglect of these concerns could lead to a mass exodus of healthcare professionals.

“The mass exodus of healthcare professionals is not just a threat; it is an unfolding reality that, if unattended, will cripple Ghana’s healthcare system,” they cautioned.

UPNMG called for urgent action, including timely salary payments, better working conditions, and the provision of essential hospital resources to ensure quality patient care. They stressed that without these interventions, Ghana risks losing more skilled healthcare workers to better opportunities abroad.

“Many nurses and midwives in Ghana continue to serve despite immense challenges, but the lack of support threatens the sustainability of the profession and the quality of healthcare nationwide,” said UPNMG National PRO, John Agbenyavuu.

The union urged the government to prioritize fair treatment, improved incentives, and better conditions for healthcare workers.

“We call on government to act decisively to ensure fair treatment, better incentives, and improved working conditions.

“By doing so, it will not only retain skilled professionals but also strengthen the nation’s ability to provide equitable and quality healthcare for all. The time for action is now.”
