It has been years since fans took a trip to the swamp. The last Shrek movie hit theatres back in 2010. The world used to be different then. But while everything has changed, the love for the green ogre hasn’t. The animated franchise continues to rule fans’ hearts.
No wonder Universal Pictures would have hoped that its 5th installment would bring the old magic back. Alas! The teaser hasn’t generated positive responses from the fans – and Zendaya might be one of the reasons.
Shrek 5 is here (the old hype isn’t though)

Shrek 5‘s teaser has been nothing short of a bombshell. What many would have expected to be one of the best films of the coming year has already attracted fans’ ire.
Releasing 16 years after Shrek Forever After, the animated flick was bound to have some departures from its prequel. And it seems that fans were not ready for the changes that it has introduced. One sore spot was the animation.
Technology has come a long way over the past decade, but looks like fans want none of it. The shine, the additional details. That isn’t what Shrek is all about. Fans want the same old green ogre who rocks up to save the day no matter who his nemesis is.

Fans did not take long to show their discontent with the look.
Some are hoping that they can pull off a ‘Sonic’ again, forcing the Studio to go the right way.
Only time will tell whether that comes off or not. With more than a year left before the movie hits the theaters, that could be a possibility. Sadly, there remains another concern – one which can’t be addressed this easily.
Fans fear that Zendaya is getting typecast (in an animated flick as well)

With Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, and Cameron Diaz returning, the core of the Shrek franchise is back. But there is a new name in the fray, Zendaya. The Euphoria star will don the role of Shrek’s daughter. And it seems like fans aren’t thrilled at the prospect.
For context, this will be one of Zendaya’s many movies alongside The Odyssey and Spider-Man 4 to hit theatres in 2026. And fans can’t process how the 28-year-old manages to bag the same role in every movie.
Fans around the world are tired of seeing Zendaya play the same old quirky and nonchalant character in every movie. At this pace, many fear that she could really give the Rock a run for his money.
In the meantime, Shrek 5 has already stepped across a host of issues that it would be best to get rid of sooner rather than later. You can watch the teaser here:
Shrek 5 hits the theatres on 23 December 2026.
