Construction of Hajj Village an Akufo-Addo legacy;Don’t take credit – NDC Gov’t told

Former Chairman of the Hajj Board, Hon Ben Abdallah has clarified that the Hajj Village being constructed is a legacy project of the Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo government.

This clarification comes at a time when the current government intends to cut sod at the same spot where construction is already taking place.

He explains that the previous government started work on the Hajj village but did not make noise about it because it was seen as a sacred project based on its religious underpinnings.

Ben Abdallah urged the current government to acknowledge that the project was started by the previous government and should not take credit for it.

ON THE NEW HAJJ VILLAGE PROJECT

My attention has been drawn to the intended Sod Cutting of the already ongoing construction of a Permanent Hajj Village at the Spintex Road stretch of the Airport lands, opposite the Action Chapel, Accra which was commenced by the erstwhile NPP administration and I present the facts as follows;

1. The process for the construction of this project was initiated by the Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo- Bawumia Government as far back as 2017 through the then Minister for Aviation, the late Kofi Adda but later saw a monumental push from the former Minister for Transport, Hon. Kweku Asiamah.

2. This was in pursuant to an appeal by the Ghana Hajj Board for a befitting Hajj Village for its operations. The Ministry of Transport and the GACL therefore settled on a site opposite the Action Chapel on the Spintex Road stretch of the Airport and the contract for the construction was awarded to a company called MAWUMS in 2024 after a PPA approval.

3. This legacy of the Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo-Bawumia government is one that was seen as a sacred project based on its religious underpinnings thereby avoiding any form of fun fair, pomp and pageantry in the name of Sod Cutting.

4. We therefore urge the current government to acknowledge the new Hajj Village construction currently ongoing as a legacy project of Nana Addo Dankwa-Bawumia government.

Attached are designs for the project and images of its construction currently underway.
