The White Lotus Season 3 opened with an intriguing first episode, with the idyllic Thai location of The White Lotus being torn apart by the sounds of gunshots. Given that Episode 2 of this season clarified that Jim, the owner of this hotel is not in fact Walton Goggins’ Rick’s father, there is another theory that is now making the rounds about Rick, especially in light of another White Lotus alum showing up at this location.
‘Gary’, who is actually Tonya’s widower Greg, has been staying near the Thai location with his new partner Chloe. Rick, has been very interested in knowing where Jim is, which might suggest that Rick is a hitman. Further, ‘Gary’ might be staying near the hotel as hired muscle for Sritala and Jim, which could explain why there were gunshots at the beginning of the season.
Chloe seeking out Chelsea adds to the mystery of the Hitman theory
A theory on Reddit suggests that Chelsea might be the only one out of the two age-gap couples at the hotel who seems to have no clue about what is going on. Greg, or ‘Gary’ has a mysterious past that has been questionable ever since his appearance in Season 1 of The White Lotus. Chloe made a beeline to meet with Chelsea once she entered the hotel. Further, Rick’s obsession with finding Jim, who we know is not his father (as far as his knowledge is concerned), might point towards the fact that Jim is there for an ulterior motive.
Another thing that was a little off was the fact that Chloe was conveniently missing when the boutique was raided, which might point towards some inside knowledge on her part, perhaps from the fact that her partner was a hitman as well. The robbery has been largely looked at as a way to get to know how the Hotel’s security works.
There is also the fact that Greg has been able to blend himself in any situation that he is in, which hints at a past that has caused him to slip in and out of situations, like a spy…or a hitman.
Why has Greg kept Rick alive in The White Lotus Season 3 so far?
There are multiple reasons that Greg and Chloe if they are hired security, might be circling Rick and Chelsea instead of outright ending him. To begin with, an attempt on his life might be bad for business, given that White Lotus guests/staff have previously died in the hotels that they live in. Given that Sritala still has a business to run, she might have instructed her hired security to not go around taking lives. The incident at the opening of the season might be a result of an impromptu altercation that could have bubbled over.
Rick also gave Mook a look in the premiere episode, which could point towards him, as a hitman, having some understanding with the hotel staff, perhaps as a way of making his job easier. Greg and Chloe might not be staying at the hotel for this precise reason: they might know that there are inside men and women who are ready to assist Rick in carrying out the hit.
