SONA2025: Mahama vows to reform scholarship scheme to benefit the needy

President John Dramani Mahama has pledged to overhaul Ghana’s scholarship system to ensure fairness and transparency, preventing wealthy individuals from dominating the scheme at the expense of the underprivileged.

Speaking during his State of the Nation Address on Thursday, February 27, he acknowledged the flaws in the current administration of scholarships, stating that many deserving but financially disadvantaged students struggle to access support due to the system being dominated by the well-off.

“To fulfil my government’s vision of promoting transparency, equity, and sustainability in the scholarship scheme, we shall streamline the award process to ensure that only deserving youth benefit,” Mahama assured.

As part of the reforms, he announced plans to introduce increased transparency, including the annual publication of the list of beneficiaries.

This move, he explained, is aimed at restoring public confidence in the scheme and ensuring that scholarships reach those who truly need them.

Mahama reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to making education accessible to all, emphasising that a fair and transparent scholarship system is key to achieving that goal.
