Susanville Walmart Leak Temporarily Disrupts Wingate Mall Water Service

A water leak discovered behind the Susanville Walmart on Wednesday led to a temporary disruption of water service to the nearby Wingate Mall. The City of Susanville Water Division responded promptly to the incident, reported at 4:00 p.m., and worked to manage the situation effectively.

Public Works Director Bob Godman stated that city crews quickly isolated the leak and collaborated with Walmart to limit the impact. They identified the smallest possible section of Walmart’s private line for shutdown, which unfortunately required cutting off the water supply to Wingate Mall.

Walmart responded swiftly, with plumbers on-site by 8:00 a.m. Thursday to assess and address the damage. However, the repair was delayed due to a specialized part needed for the fix, which had to be shipped from Reno and did not arrive until Saturday morning.

In the meantime, city staff explored alternative solutions to restore water to the mall but found no safe options. Once the necessary part arrived on Saturday, Walmart’s plumbers completed the repair, including pouring concrete to stabilize the area. By around noon, city crews had assisted in restoring water service to Wingate Mall.

Due to the line’s exposure during repairs, the State Division of Water Resources Engineer requested precautionary measures, including a thorough flushing of the pipe and issuing a five-minute flush and a voluntary boil water notice to Wingate Mall customers. Additionally, city water crews collected a water sample for contamination testing.

The City Water Division praised Walmart for their prompt response and expressed appreciation to Wingate Mall customers for their patience throughout the repair process.
