Man, 40, released without charge after woman, 39, found dead on way to funeral in Rosslare ferry tragedy

A MAN arrested after a woman was found dead on a ferry in Wexford has been released without charge.

The 40-year-old male was questioned by gardai following the discovery of a 39-year-old woman in the bathroom of a ferry that arrived at Rosslare Europort on Tuesday.

It emerged this evening that investigators are not looking for anyone else in relation to the death of the woman, who was named locally as Mary Cash.

It’s understood that the incident is now being treated as a personal tragedy.

A family liaison officer has also been appointed by gardai to help support the deceased’s family.

The ship’s captain made an emergency call for assistance as the ferry approached Rosslare, and Mrs Cash was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

A garda spokesperson said: “Gardaí in Wexford continue to investigate all of the circumstances surrounding the death of a woman on board a passenger ferry en route to Rosslare, Co. Wexford on the evening of Tuesday, 25th February 2025.

“A post mortem examination on the deceased woman has been completed, the results of which are not being released for operational reasons.

“The male arrested in connection with the investigation has been released from detention without charge.

“A Garda Family Liaison Officer (FLO) continues to engage with and support the family of the deceased.

“A Garda Senior Investigating Officer, will now supervise the completion of an investigation for the purpose of a file to assist a Coroner’s Inquest.

“As previously highlighted, An Garda Síochána is not investigating any other separate alleged Public Order Incidents on board this ferry sailing.”

Mrs Cash is understood to have been originally from Ireland but had been living in Harrow, just north of London, for some time.

She’s believed to have been travelling to a funeral in Co Kildare with a large group.
