‘He was correct’ – Rangers hero Ally McCoist reveals how Celtic-daft Billy Connolly gave Walter Smith management advice

ALLY McCOIST has revealed how Celtic fan Billy Connolly once gave Walter Smith management advice – which was gratefully accepted by The Gaffer.

The striker turned broadcaster was discussing maverick players on the talkSPORT Breakfast Show this morning.

And he recalled how The Big Yin dished out some sage advice to the later Rangers manager about his star player Paul Gascoigne.

He said: “I remember Billy Connolly was speaking to Walter about Gascoigne, as Billy loves his football.

“He was asking Walter what was he like and Walter said he was a genius.

“Then Billy said Walter, ‘Remember you have to be able to handle the genius but the genius might not be able to handle you.’

“And he was correct.”

Ally then went on to praise other geniuses he had played with in the all-conquering Ibrox side of the 90s – but revealed they had their flaws.

He added: “I’ve played with guys who were geniuses like Coops (Davie Cooper) and Brian Laudrup.

“Now they might not necessarily do any tracking back but you forgave them because they could win you games.”

McCoist was the Rangers manager himself from 2011 to 2014 after becoming Smith’s prodigy at Ibrox.

The Rangers legend this week joked he would be willing to make a stunning return to the hot-seat – if his old club wanted to bring him back.

That was before Barry Ferguson was appointed their interim boss yesterday.

Radio colleague Jeff Stelling asked him if he’d drop his MANY media commitments to return to Ibrox.

McCoist said: “Listen, you know me, I’d drop everything for Rangers! You included!”
