January signing Jeffrey Schlupp was Rodgers’ preferred option for the Champions League second leg against Bayern Munich last week and was expected to keep his place in the manager’s starting XI tonight.
But punters were surprised to see Taylor hadn’t even made the bench.
Speaking pre-match, Rodgers revealed the defender’s absence isn’t down to injury but is instead due to a family emergency.
His wife had gone into labour earlier today.
Rodgers told BBC Sportsound: “We’re better than what we were [when we played Aberdeen here in October].
“We got punished in that game for being a little loose at the beginning of the second half.
“In fairness to the players, they reacted superbly well in the League Cup semi-final and the game up there [at Pittodrie] in challenging conditions. It’ll be a different game.
“It’s been a really challenging month for them, they’ll have felt the ups and downs of football after a great start. Jimmy has changed the team and re-energised it.
“Greg [Taylor] was in the squad and late this afternoon, when we’re at the hotel, his wife went into labour. Family is more important than football so we sent him away to be with her.”
