“This is killing me”: Edie Falco Can Never Watch ‘The Sopranos’ Again Because of James Gandolfini

James Gandolfini left behind a stellar legacy in the form of The Sopranos, before his untimely demise in 2013. The life of the show, Gandolfini starred as Tony Soprano opposite Eddie Falco, who took on the role of Edie Falco.

While a range of his colleagues on The Sopranos have said only good things about the late actor, Falco, as one would expect, had special memories with her on-screen husband. The actress even revealed that she can no longer watch the show due to the emotional weight of losing her co-star, James Gandolfini.

Falco admitted in a 2021 interview with The Irish Times that she recently attempted to rewatch The Sopranos with her friend and former co-star Aida Turturro, who played Janice Soprano.

However, she found the experience overwhelmingly difficult, unable to move past the fourth episode.

Aida and I watched a few episodes, and I said, ‘This is killing me.’ It was too fraught, and a big part of that is Jim. People die and you move on, then you see them on screen, and it is too shocking.

The deep bond between Falco and Gandolfini transcended their on-screen relationship. While they didn’t spend much time together off-set, Falco described him as her “soulmate” in the craft of acting.

Falco reminisced about working alongside Gandolfini, recalling his tendency to fully immerse himself in scenes—especially those involving food. The actress shared a humorous story about how Gandolfini would continuously eat during takes, making it a challenge for the production team.

We learned tricks so it looked like we were eating, but we weren’t. But Jim ate in every frigging take, and he ate between takes.

One particularly memorable moment occurred while filming a scene where Gandolfini was eating ice cream. Falco noticed that he kept refilling his bowl and continued eating, eventually slipping into what she called a “sugar coma.” The crew had to halt filming and resume on another day because he was so overwhelmed by the sugar intake.

Falco likened James Gandolfini to a five-year-old, claiming that despite warning him several times, the actor simply continued to eat until he actually got sick.

The Sopranos is available to stream on Hulu and Max.
