“Think about who Bryan Cranston was 20 years ago”: It’s Criminal How Ty Burrell Hasn’t Got His Own ‘Breaking Bad’ After Flawless Run On ‘Modern Family’

Ty Burrell’s Phil Dunphy had been one of the most beloved characters in Modern Family. The credit of it goes as much to the writer for etching out such a dynamic character, as it does to Burrell for his spectacular performance.

As such, it’s no wonder that not only the character still impacts the fandom, but that they want to see him in more diverse genres. Incidentally, while talking about Ty Burrell’s Phil Dunphy, fans were reminded of another actor who played a popular sitcom dad.

Now, although he made fans laugh for several years, later turned into one of the most bada*s characters to have ever graced the small screen. If anything, it’s nothing short of criminal that Burrell hasn’t landed something like that for himself yet.

Ty Burrell should have gotten his own Breaking Bad after Bryan Cranston led the way

Fans have loved Ty Burrell as Phil Dunphy in Modern Family for 11 long years. One of the  most dynamic characters in the show, fans have praised his stellar performance and comic timing.

On the topic of beloved sitcom dads, though, people were reminded of another actor who graced the same role, before stunning fans with one of the most iconic characters on screen.

That is, of course, Bryan Cranston. Cranston played the goofy, and unhinged Hal in Malcolm in The Middle for the entire seven seasons the show ran. Although it was a few years short of Modern Family, the show opened new horizons in Hollywood for the actor.

What is interesting is, that even though Malcolm in The Middle was rightfully popular, it pales in front of Modern Family when it comes to having a global fan base. However, whereas the 2000s show landed Bryan Cranston his once-in-a-lifetime Breaking Bad role, the same couldn’t be said for Ty Burrell.

If anything, this just means that Hollywood is missing out on a talent that, if explored properly, would provide another groundbreaking show like Breaking Bad. As per fans, the fact that Hollywood hasn’t pounced on that chance yet is nothing but a shame.

Fans want Ty Burrell to play a serious character after Modern Family’s funny Phil Dunphy

Although Modern Family was primarily a sitcom, the show had quite a few raw, emotional moments as well. Incidentally, Ty Burrell’s Phil Dunphy had been a part of a lot of those scenes, which he played spectacularly.

As such, after getting amused by that character for over a decade, fans would like to see Burrell in genres that would explore some serious roles. Although they seem disappointed by the fact that it hasn’t happened already, they remain hopeful for it.

For example, during a discussion on the topic in the r/television subreddit, a fan pointed out the similarities between Bryan Cranston and Ty Burrell’s career.

Just think about who Bryan Cranston was 20 years ago. He was a wonderful goofy sit+com dad. I’m not saying Ty Burrell is headed there but who knows.

Others joined in the discussion supporting the fan by noting that they are surprised by the fact that Burrell hasn’t already featured in a big budget Marvel movie yet.

A few also wondered that it could be that Burrell is happy with the money he made from Modern Family for now, and is picking his options carefully. Something, Cranston himself got to do because of what he made from Malcolm in The Middle.

Regardless, it’s been quite a few years since Modern Family concluded, and Burrell has not yet landed a big role in Hollywood, which has been concerning to fans.

Both Bryan Cranston and Ty Burrell have shown their phenomenal range in whatever projects they worked on. One might wonder whether a great comic actor could truly play a serious role just as well.

However, Cranston has more than proved his worth as Walter White in Breaking Bad. While fans have yet to see something like that from Ty Burrell, they seem hopeful that a similar chance would come knocking on his door as well.

Modern Family is streaming on Hulu, and you can watch Breaking Bad on Netflix.
