“The best news in a long time”: It’s Official, Kathleen Kennedy to Step Down as Star Wars President as Disney Finally Wakes Up

Kathleen Kennedy might be stepping down as the President of Lucasfilm come the end of 2025, which has gotten a lot of Star Wars fans rejoicing. There is no concrete announcement that has supported this claim yet, Puck News has reported that Kennedy has already begun talking with higher-ups at Disney and her associates about her retirement.

Kennedy’s exit has brought on a lot of excitement from Star Wars fans, who largely hold the Lucasfilm President for the recent state of the franchise. Be it the mishandling of the Sequel Trilogy, or the run of shows like The Acolyte and The Book of Boba Fett, all the failures, at least by the fandom, have been laid at the feet of Kathleen Kennedy, whose possible exit has been looked at as a new era for Star Wars.

If it is indeed true that Kathleen Kennedy will be seeing herself out of Lucasfilm (as reported by Puck News), this would mean that the only other Star Wars content that the current President of Lucasfilm will oversee is the release of Season 2 of Andor, which has drawn a lot of praise from its trailer. 2026’s Mandalorian and Grogu film will probably be released under the leadership of Kennedy’s successor.

Kathleen Kennedy’s reign as Lucasfilm head has seen some rare wins too, despite the colossal fumbles that have plagued the franchise ever since it was acquired by Disney. The Mandalorian successfully recreated what the franchise could look like, and has managed to expand greatly on the New Republic Era. Further, there has been the revival of the Clone Wars animated series under her reign, along with the introduction of The Bad Batch. Andor and Rogue One managed to do a lot of good press for the franchise as well

However, these successes were overshadowed by the immense failures of The Last Jedi, The Rise of Skywalker, The Acolyte, Solo: A Star Wars Story and The Book of Boba Fett, all of which had interesting premises, following believed characters. However, not only did they manage to tank under Kennedy, but also alienated the fan fanbase of Star Wars.

Who is primed to take Kathleen Kennedy’s spot?

Dave Filoni

The obvious choice to replace Kathleen Kennedy is Dave Filoni. The creator has been responsible for some of the most brilliant pieces of Star Wars content, be it in collaboration with Iron Man director Jon Favreau, or by himself when it comes to the animated side of things.

Dave Filoni is going to have a hand in the production of the upcoming Star Wars film, the first since 2019’s Rise of Skywalker, which will feature Din Djarin and his son, Grogu, as central characters in the film. The last we saw the duo was when they retired at the end of Season 3 of the show. They also seemed to have made a community of their own, which might culminate with Ahsoka when it comes to fighting the Imperial Remnants, possibly led by Grand Admiral Thrawn, who made his appearance in the Ahsoka series.

Favreau himself is a great candidate himself to take over, given his love for the franchise, and how he managed to revitalize it with The Mandalorian. Other Lucasfilm projects could also thrive under Filoni and Favreau, such as Indiana Jones and Willow.
