Jensen Ackles’ Unhinged 2001 Serial Killer Role Has Convinced Me the Dexter Universe Needs Him Now More Than Ever

After an underwhelming finale, which was followed by a mixed sequel and a disappointing prequel, the Dexter IP is now set to return with a follow-up to New Blood, marking the return of Michael C. Hall in the shoes of Dexter. With Paramount reportedly eying to expand this killer franchise, a lot might come down to the reception of this upcoming installment.

As for its potential future, Dexter could benefit from the casting of The Boys star Jensen Ackles, especially due to his chops in one single role, which can put most villains in the last two Dexter spin-offs to shame.

Jensen Ackles’ villainous prowess against Michael C. Hall’s Dexter could be a sight to behold

While Ackles was mostly recognizable for his stint in Supernatural prior to playing Soldier Boy in The Boys, even before playing Dean in the CW show, he proved his acting prowess in Days of Our Lives and Dark Angel. Although season 1 of Dark Angle featured Ackles in just one episode, it’s enough to make a case for his casting as a potential Dexter nemesis in the future.

In Pollo Loco, Jensen Ackles plays Ben, aka X5-493, who becomes a serial killer after escaping the facility. Despite his limited presence, The Boys star did a phenomenal job of playing a serial killer. Moreover, impressed by Ackles’ performance, the showrunners opted to bring the actor back for season 2, in which he was given a longer rope as Alec.

Considering one of the most underwhelming aspects of Original Sin was its villainous roster, if Resurrection succeeds in putting the IP back on the map, Ackles’ casting opposite to Michael C. Hall would be a sight to behold.

As for the upcoming show, apart from the notable inclusions of Peter Dinklage and Uma Thurman, alongside Hall, Resurrection will also see several returning faces, including David Zayas, James Remar, and Jack Alcott.

On the flip side, Jennifer Carpenter, who starred as Debra Morgan in the parent show and its sequel, has no intentions to step back in Morgan’s shoes, as according to the 1923 star, she has “completed that box” (via People).

I am pretty focused where I am, and I feel like I’ve completed that box. I’m proud of it.

With Paramount going all in with the casting, hopefully, it’ll be a return to form for Dexter, which could make room for Ackles’ potential casting in the follow-ups.

Dexter: Resurrection will premiere this summer on Paramount+ with Showtime
