Todd Howard May Have Snuck In a Dark Souls Reference in Fallout 4

As a gamer, nothing brings a bigger smile to your face than seeing an Easter egg avoiding the boundaries of copyright laws and sneaking in a reference to one popular franchise into another. Perhaps the best one for all the FromSoftware fans out there would be this Dark Souls reference that is included in Todd Howard’s Fallout 4.

Being an IP owned by Bethesda, not many would expect something from the Dark Souls trilogy to show up in something like Fallout 4. However, fans have found this one place in the game that plays a clear homage to one of the most iconic elements from Hidetaka Miyazaki’s franchise.

The first Dark Souls title, which came out in 2011, was all about rekindling fires and happened to be the spiritual successor to the Demon’s Souls game that came out 2 years prior. Throughout the game, the player could observe swords and fire go hand-in-hand, especially at bonfires.

This went on to become a signature element of the Dark Souls franchise. Fans have even noticed it appear in many different games, including Todd Howard’s Fallout 4. Following is a post made on the game’s official subreddit that showcases the subtle nod to Hidetaka Miyazaki’s franchise.

User u/agnaaiu further in the comments of the post explains how players can find the easter egg for themselves in Nuka World, Bradberton, which happens to be a small town placed on the top-right of the game’s map. It is not guaranteed if including this part was definitely a nod to the Dark Souls franchise, but there seems no other explanation for it now.

The gaming industry has seen its fair share of great directors, and Todd Howard and Hidetaka Miyazaki happen to be two legends of this bunch who have helped transform and shape the gaming world and community over the decades.

Miyazaki over time has delivered different masterpieces, including the Dark Souls trilogy to Bloodborne and his magnum opus, Elden Ring. Furthermore, Mr. Howard has delivered many different projects that players have loved deeply, including Skyrim, Fallout 3 and 4, and the latest Starfield.

This is ultimately part of the reason why seeing a Dark Souls Easter egg appear in Fallout 4 happens to be one of the best parts of the game. It showcases one great director acknowledging the presence and the work of another, a brotherhood we didn’t know we needed but deserved in this era of gaming.
