Redding League of Women Voters Discusses Electoral College Reform and Popular Vote Initiative

REDDING, Calif. — The Redding Area League of Women Voters convened a community meeting on Sunday at the Redding Library to discuss the electoral college system. The meeting aimed to address myths surrounding the system and advocate for electing the President through the popular vote.

Susan Wilson, president of the Redding Area League of Women Voters, highlighted the need for greater understanding of the electoral college. “The electoral college is a complicated constitutional thing that we need to know much more about,” Wilson stated, noting widespread misconceptions about its workings.

During her presentation, Wilson shared data indicating that presidential campaigns primarily target 10 swing states, effectively sidelining voters in the remaining 40 states. The league advocates for a “one person, one vote” system to ensure every vote carries equal weight.

Wilson expressed skepticism about Congress eliminating the electoral college but pointed to the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact as a positive step. The compact currently includes 18 states pledging their electoral votes to the popular vote winner. While these states are predominantly Democratic strongholds, seven more states are considering joining, including swing states Arizona, Nevada, and Florida, and Republican stronghold Texas.
