Joe Rogan has long expressed his admiration for Robert E. Howard’s Conan the Barbarian stories and has mentioned that none of the adaptations have done a good job translating them to the screen. However, in a recent podcast episode with comedian Felipe Esparza, Rogan mentioned that Jason Momoa did a great job in the 2011 film.
While the film was a box office bomb and generally received negative reviews, Momoa’s performance was appreciated and Rogan seemed to be extremely enamored by the Game of Thrones star’s performance. He also hoped that Momoa’s Conan would be explored better in a film directed by Quentin Tarantino.
Joe Rogan wished Quentin Tarantino directed a Conan the Barbarian movie with Jason Momoa

Robert E. Howard’s Conan the Barbarian stories have been adapted many times but the most popular one is John Milius’ 1982 film starring Arnold Schwarzenegger. The film was the actor’s breakthrough after being cast by the makers who saw his bodybuilding documentary Pumping Iron. The film was a huge success and led to a sequel Conan the Destroyer.
Noted podcast host and sports commentator, Joe Rogan, however, disagreed that Schwarzenegger did a good job in the 1982 film. Rogan claimed to be a huge fan of the original Howard stories and mentioned that none of the adaptations came close to the author’s original works.

However, he did appreciate Jason Momoa’s performance in the 2011 adaptation on a recent podcast episode of The Joe Rogan Experience. Rogan even mentioned that Momoa looked the part and the characterization came as close to Robert E. Howard’s books as any. He also had a pitch for a future film,
The guy’s still capable of playing this character. Someone, please…I wish Quentin Tarantino was into Conan. Quentin if you’re hearing me please read the books Quentin Tarantino doing Conan would be the most epic thing of all time.
Momoa’s 2011 film was a box office bomb, earning only $63.5 million against a $90 million budget (via Box Office Mojo). Momoa was still an upcoming star back then, having gained notoriety for his role as Khal Drogo in Game of Thrones.
Quentin Tarantino spoke about the kind of Conan film he would make

While Joe Rogan hopes for another shot at a Jason Momoa starring Conan the Barbarian adaptation with Quentin Tarantino directing, the filmmaker has already expressed how much of a fan he is of John Milius, who directed the 1982 Arnold Schwarzenegger starrer. Tarantino even interviewed Milius way back in the day (via FSR).
When Tarantino appeared on The Joe Rogan Experience, the host pitched his idea for a Conan film with the Pulp Fiction filmmaker directing and Jason Momoa acting. While Tarantino initially recommended Robert Rodriguez for the task, he later described how he wanted to adapt the comic book version of the stories,
If I did…I love the whole comic series where they…one of the short stories was Queen of the Golden Pearl [correction: Queen of the Black Coast] or whatever it is…it is one of the greatest runs of the comics.
While the Inglorious Basterds filmmaker was not keen on Jason Momoa’s take on the character, he appreciated the child actor’s (a young Leo Howard) performance.
Jason Momoa’s Conan the Barbarian is streaming on Peacock.
