The Los Angeles Lakers have endured quite a bit of change over the past few weeks, as they have opted to pair up superstar point guard Luka Doncic with the legendary LeBron James. That has resulted in the team needing to adjust on the fly, with head coach JJ Redick working on figuring out how he wants his team’s offense to operate.
Both Doncic and James are excellent playmakers who excel at running the point on offense, but when they both are on the court, one guy has to play off the ball. After Doncic put together a 32-point, 10-rebound, seven-assist performance on Saturday night against the Denver Nuggets, Redick revealed how he wants the Lakers to operate on offense moving forward.
“JJ Redick said that the Lakers’ offense needs to run through Luka Doncic’s hands, with LeBron James and Austin Reaves running it more when they stagger the primary ball handlers,” Jovan Buha of The Athletic reported.

Anytime a monumental move like the one the Lakers pulled off for Doncic gets made, adjustments are going to be necessary. Against the Nuggets, though, Doncic looked incredibly comfortable after a couple of quiet outings to begin his career with Los Angeles, and that came as a result of him running the offense more, as opposed to working off-ball with James or Austin Reaves running things.
There will obviously be times where Doncic plays off the ball and turns things over to James, but the Lakers have made it clear they are intent on building around Doncic, and that involves catering the offense to him. It was only one game, but Doncic looked like his old self against Denver, and Redick may have figured out what he wants his team’s new-look offense to be moving forward.
